Question Answer
What information does an atomic number give you? The number of protons in an atom.
What information does a mass number give you? The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Why do elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties? They have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
How many electrons do Group 1 elements have in their outer shell? They each have one electron in their outer shell.
What is another name for the Group 0 elements? The noble gases.
Why are Group 0 elements unreactive? They have a stable arrangement of electrons. / They have a full outer shell.
What is the charge of an Atom? Atoms have no charge overall. They are neutral.
Describe the structure of an atom. Atoms have a small nucleus surrounded by electrons. The nucleus is in the middle of the atom and contains protons and neutrons. The electrons occupy shells around the nucleus.
What is the relative charge of... A) a proton? B) a neutron? C) an electron? A)+1 B) 0 C) -1
What feature of an atom determines what type of atom it is? The number of protons in its nucleus.
What is an element? An element is a substance that only contains one type of atom.
Approximately how many elements are there? There are about 100 elements.
What is another name for an electron shell? An energy level.
How many electrons can go in the first electron shell? 2 electrons
How many electrons can go in the second electron shell? 8 electrons
How many electrons can go in the third electron shell? 8 electrons
Which shell fills with electrons first? The one closest to the nucleus. / The one with lowest energy level.
What is a molecule? A molecule is two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
What is an ion? An ion is a charged particle.
Do metal atoms form positive ions or negative ions? Positive ions.
Do non-metal atoms form positive ions or negative ions? Negative ions.
If a compound is formed from a metal and a non-metal, what type of bonding will be present in the compound? Ionic bonding.
What type of bonding holds the atoms in a molecule together? Covalent bonding.
30 g of magnesium oxide is formed from 18 g of magnesium. How much oxygen reacted? 30 – 18 = 12 g as the mass of the reactants equals the mass of the products
