Imperialsism Ones countries domination over another country’s economic, political, and cultural institutions.
Historical Globalization A period from 1492, to the end of world war two when the soviet union and the United States emerged as superpowers where globalization happened. ex) Chris columbus’ first voyage
Mercantalism In colonies of the 16th to 18th century, trade was strictly controlled to benefit the European imperial power (one group is benefiting, the other is not). ex) Xiongu sending Xhang to find allies and then seize all his traded goods
Capitalism An economic system that advocates free trade, competition and choice as a means of achieving prosperity.
Grand Exchange Trading process where 2 indigenous groups trade goods. Legacy- Something that has been passed on by those in the past.
Ethnocentrism A word that combines “ethnic” and “centre”. It refers to a way of thinking that centers on one’s race and culture. Ethnocentric people believe that their worldview is the only valid one. ex) residential schools (thinking one culture is better so it is imposed on on other)
Eurocentrism A form of ethnocentrism that uses European ethnic, national, religious, and linguistic criteria to judge other people’s and their cultures. ex) European and Western Cultures (European thinking they are better)
Deopopulation A reduction in population caused by natural or human-made forces. ex) Smallpox, genocide, black death, 1 child policy in China
Cultural Contact One cultural comes into contact with another (genocide, ideas, treaties, trade, assimilation, new disease)
Triangle Trade Trade amongst three parts or regions used in 15/16 century. ex) Trade between Africa, Caribbean, and American colonies
Social Darwinism Survival of the fittest of politics and sociology/ stronger cultures controls ex) Eugenics (breeding to create specific offspring traits), Hitler and blonde hair/blue eyes
