  5. 5What warning does Laertes give Ophelia? Not to believe Hamlet loves her because he will take her "virtue" and then not marry her and he could ruin her reputation which would bring dishonour to their family, then nobody will marry her.
  6. 6What advise does Polonius give Laertes?Laetres is going to university in France. He tells him to keep his thoughts to himself and be cautious. Be friendly but not overdo it. Hold onto trustworthy friendships. Don't be quick too quick to pick a fight. Don't borrow money or lend it. And above all, be true to yourself.

  10. 10What does Hamlet vow to do?Obey his father’s ghost and to take revenge against his uncle. He says that he will think of nothing else until this is accomplished:
  11. 11What does Polonius believe is the cause of Hamlet’s “madness?” What do you think is the real cause?Hamlet is driven “mad” with love for Ophelia. He thinks this is because Opheilia rejected him.
  12. 12What news does Voltemand share about Fortinbras? The King of Norway (Fortinbras’ uncle) made Fortinbras vow not to attack Denmark. Norway will be going to war against Poland instead, but want to pass through Denmark on their way to Norway.

  17. 17What events are depicted in the “play?”The events described to Hamlet by the ghost of his father. The play depicts the murder of a King by his brother.
  18. 18Why does Hamlet observe Claudius during the play?Claudius will react strongly to the play, and will feel so guilty seeing his own actions portrayed on the stage, that he will give away his guilt in his reaction.

  21. 21What stops Hamlet from taking revenge?Hamlet feels that if he kills Claudius during prayer, Claudius will be forgiven and will go to heaven. This is in contrast to Hamlet’s father, who is cursed to walk the earth as a ghost because he had no chance to be forgiven for his sins before his death.
  22. 22In Hamlet’s conversation with his mother, what seems to be the main source of his anger? He briefly talked about that Claudius killed his father, but rants about his mother's marriage to Claudius and how disgusted he is with her. It is her lack of “virtue” and her unwillingness to live as an elderly widow that seems to trouble him most.
  23. 23Why did the ghost of Hamlet Sr. visit Hamlet while he was speaking with Gertrude? To remind him of what he has promised to do – to get revenge for his murder. He wants Hamlet to stop focusing on Gertrude’s sins.
