Flashcards
Network Security
Cards in this deck (19)
- 1What is a network attack?Attempt to gain access to, steal, modify or delete data
- 2Active attackWhere someone tries to modify, delete data or to prevent a network to function properly E.G: A Denial of service attack (DOS)
- 3Eavesdropping (Passive)Where the hacker monitors a network in order to gain information E.G: Wiretapping, where communications are monitored
- 4External attackWhere someone outside an organisation attempts to hack into a network
- 5Internal attackWhere someone whithin an organisation attempts to hack into a network
- 6What is malware?Malware is a general term to describe a software that is designed to hack a system. Malware can take many different forms
- 7Types of malwareWorms, Viruses, Trojans, Spyware, Ransomware
- 8What are Worms?Programs similar to viruses except that they are not hidden within other files. Worms often spread through emails.
- 9What are Viruses?Programs embedded (hidden) within other files. They replicate themselves and become part of other programs. Viruses often cause damage by deleting or modifying data.
- 10What is Trojans?Programs which pretend to be legitimate but in reality are malware. They are often disguised as email attachments. Trojans cannot spread by themselves - instead they deceive a user into installing the program.
- 11What is Spyware?Programs that monitor user activities (such as websites visited, usernames and passwords used) and send the information back to a hacker.
- 12What is Ransomware?Programs that attempt to blackmail a user into making a payment to a hacker. Some types of ransomware do little but try to scare users into paying, while others go further - they encrypt documents and will not decrypt them until a ransom is paid.
- 13What is Phishing?Emails that try to trick users into giving away personal details. For example, a fake website designed to catch data such as bank account numbers and security codes usually through non-genuine messages.
- 14What is Brute Force?Where a program is used to find a password by trying all possible combinations of characters until the correct one is obtained.
- 15What is Denial of service (DOS)?Where many computers could be used to force a web server offline through constant requests
- 16What is Data interception and theft?Where data is intercepted during transmission. This is done using software called a packet sniffer, which examines data packets as they are sent around a network, or across the internet. The information gathered is sent back to a hacker.
- 17What is Structured query language (SQL) injection?Where SQL code is used as an input which could be used to hack a website or software by tricking it into thinking the code has been modified
- 18What is Poor network security?Where rules in a company or organisation have poor network policies and rules to protect it form attacks
- 19How can people affect the security of a network?People can ignore policies and rules and make mistakes and download suspicious files that can very easily cripple a network
