Flashcards
Lecture 1.5 - Second language acquisition (without articles)
Cards in this deck (17)
- 1What is a “phoneme”? Give the phoneme’s in the word “Pit”.The smallest unit of sound within a spoken word. - /p/ /i/ /t/
- 2What is a “graphene”? Give the graphene’s of the word “tear”.Letter or letters (!) that represent a speech sound (phoneme). - /t/ /ea/ /r/
- 3What is a “morpheme”? Give the morphemes in the word “walk”The smallest unit of meaning within a spoken word. - /walk/
- 4What is the transition that happens when you learn to read?Learning to read =
• concept → spoken sound
-changes to-
• written word → sound -> concept - 5What is meant by “orthography”, “semantics” & “phonology”• Orthography = spelling (orthodontist = where should teeth be,
orthography = where should letters be)
• Semantics = meaning
• Phonology = sound - 6What does it mean to say that a languages has less or more orthographic depth? Which language is more difficult to (learn how to) read?In a language with less orthographic depth a specific letter is always pronounced the same. While in a language with more orthographic depth the relations between letters & sounds are more arbitrary. The more orthographic depth a language has, the more difficult it is to (learn how to) read.
- 7What is meant with syllabic structureHow complex the syllables used in the language are (how many syllables in one word, how the syllables themselves are arranged?)
- 8In what way does orthographic depth influence the development of reading skills?More orthographic depth (less transparency) → more errors in reading.
So in English → on average more reading errors. - 9Which two components determine a child’s reading comprehension according to the Simple View of Reading (SVR)?Decoding
(word recognition)
&
Linguistic comprehension
(vocabulary, listening comprehension, morpho-syntactic) - 10How do you measure decoding? (what is meant with decoding also)By measuring word recognition. How many words a child recognizes, this is how big their decoding skills are.
- 11How do you measure linguistic comprehension?By measuring vocabulary & listening comprehension
- 12When a child is younger and is monolingual what forms the main challenge (decoding or linguistic comprehension) and when the child gets older?Main challenge for younger children:
Decoding
When they’re older this forms less of a problem, and the main challenge is:
Linguistic comprehension - 13Which three domains are important for language acquisition according to componential model of reading (CMR)?Cognitive domain:
SVR's principles: Decoding x Linguistic Comprehension = Reading comprehension
Psychological domain:
Teacher and students' variables
Ecological domain:
Home and school factors - 14How do you measure the cognitive domain?- Word recognition
- Word reading fluency
- Vocabulary
- Listening comprehension - 15How do you measure the psychological domain?- Reading motivation
- Mainstream acculturation (adaptation to new majority social & cultural norms vs. keeping your native minority social & cultural norms) - 16What two dimensions play a role in the process of acculturation (assimilation to the new dominant culture)?- Adaptation dimension (Do I want to establish good relationships with the host culture)
- Cultural maintenance dimension (Do I want to maintain good relations with my native culture) - 17What are indicators of the ecological domain a person grows up in?3 indicators of home language environment:
- Maternal education
- Number of books in the home
- Starting age at which one was read to
