Flashcards
anatomy chpt 5
Cards in this deck (14)
- 1integumentary systemskin (also hair, nails, etc.)
- 22 regions of skinepidermis and dermis
- 3epidermisupper (superficial) layer of skin, made of epithelial tissue, keratinized stratified squamous, thinner than dermis
- 4dermislower layer of skin (under epidermis), made mostly of fibrous dense irregular connective tissue, includes hypodermis
- 5hypodermispart of dermis (lowest layer), mostly made of adipose (fat) tissue, good at insulation and shock absorption
- 6what is the main skin cellkeratinocyte
- 75 layers of epidermisstratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidem (thick skin), stratum corneum
- 84 cell types in epidermiskeratinocytes (MAIN), melanocytes, dendritic cells, tactile (merkel cells)
- 9stratum basaleAKA stratum germanitvum, lowest layer of epidermis, single layer of stem cells, continuously undergoing mitosis, new layers push old ones up (as surface gets sluffed off), lots of melanocytes (10-25%) in this layer
- 10what layer has lots of melanocytesstratum basale
- 11stratum spinosumprickly keratinocytes, 2nd lowest layer of epidermis, good at resisting tension, lots of melanosomes and dendritic cells
- 12stratum granulosum3rd lowest layer of epidermis, cells have granules (packages of keratin- strengthens upper cells), cells start to make keratin and glycolipids (water resistant)
- 13stratum lucidumthin clear layer, only in thick skin (bottom of feet, palm of hand), between stratum granulosum and corneum, flat dead keratinocytes
- 14stratum corneumtop layer of epidermis, made up only of dead keratinocytes (bc not close enough to blood supply) surrounded by glycolipids, makes up most of epidermal thickness, cells provide protection
