2.3 weather

Samuel Harris Geography GCSE English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 11. Explain how the enhanced greenhouse effect occurs.Heat energy from the sun beams down onto the Earth. Some of it passes through a blanket of gases in our atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such as CO² and methane trap this heat. Human activity is producing more greenhouse gases and so more heat is being trapped.
  2. 22. How has industry resulted in an increase in greenhouse gases and so contributed to climate change/the enhanced greenhouse effect? As levels of disposable income rise, increased demand for the production of consumer goods leads to industry growth and the need for more energy, resulting in more fossil fuels being burnt, and so an increase in carbon dioxide emissions.
  3. 33. How has transport resulted in an increase in greenhouse gases and so contributed to climate change/the enhanced greenhouse effect? With cars becoming more affordable and more people taking flights over long distances, huge quantities of fuel are used. Almost all transport relies on burning fossil fuels in some way, increasing the amount of greenhouse gases released.
  4. 44. How has energy resulted in an increase in greenhouse gases and so contributed to climate change/the enhanced greenhouse effect? The demand for electricity is growing because of increasing populations and new technologies. Most of our energy is produced through burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), which produce greenhouse gases. E.g. in China 75% of energy is produced from burning coal.
  5. 55. How has farming resulted in an increase in greenhouse gases and so contributed to climate change/the enhanced greenhouse effect?Population growth has led to a higher demand for food production. Mechanisation means more fuel is burnt, and intensive farming of cattle (due to a demand for Western style diets) and rice results in increased production of methane, which is a greenhouse gas. An increase in rice production is primarily due to growing populations in Asia.
  6. 66. Rising sea levels occur as a result of global warming. Which of the following is a reason for rising sea levels? An increase in temperature will result in land-based ice melting and adding to the amount of water in the oceans. In addition to this thermal expansion of the oceans takes place due to warmer temperatures, further adding to sea level rise.
  7. 77. Which of the following is a negative impact of rising sea levels?Low-lying countries and low-lying coastal areas could be flooded. The Maldives is the flattest country on Earth, the highest point being only 2.4 metres above sea level. Predictions of how much global sea levels will rise before the end of the century vary from 20cm to more than 1 metre. This puts large amounts of the Maldives at serious risk.
  8. 88. Changing patterns of crop yield occur as a result of global warming. Which of the following is a reason for changing patterns of crop yield?Photosynthesis is a complicated process that can be negatively affected by increases in temperature or decreases in sunlight, both of which can occur because of global climate change. Reductions in photosynthesis will result in a reduction in crop yield.
  9. 99. Which of the following is a negative impact of changing patterns of crop yield? In Africa, countries such as Tanzania and Mozambique will have longer periods of drought and shorter growing seasons. They could lose almost 1/3 of their maize crop. With lower crop yields, large sections of the population could suffer from malnutrition, and the economy will suffer due to there being fewer food exports.
  10. 1010. Glaciers are retreating as a result of global warming. Which of the following is a negative impact of retreating glaciers.Melting of high mountain glaciers can lead to flooding of the local area in the short term. In the long term, with a smaller volume of ice available in the glacier, there may be water shortages for farmers because less water is produced by the glacier on a regular basis.
