computer science revision for CAT
Cards in this deck (18)
- 1Types of softwareyou can get a lot of different software's such as IOS and Microsoft
- 2Operating systemsAn operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is a component of the system software in a computer system.
- 3ApplicationApplication software can be divided into two general classes: systems software and applications software. Applications software (also called end-user programs) include such things as database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spreadsheets.
- 4Open sourceyou can have free applications however ant sell it but if you modify the application you also have ti sell it for free.E.G. Microsoft word
- 5Off the shelfit is a software that is normally used in a home or at school. for example there are word processors, spreadsheets and database.
- 6Database applicationkeeping customer records, sales records appointments system
- 7Desktop publishing applicationcrafting leaflets, posters, business cards
- 8presentation softwarecreating presentations to show to customer of staff
- 9Graphics applicationmanipulating images that can be used at home, school or business
- 10Web design applicationcreating personal or business websites
- 11Off the shelf (2)it is cheap compare to custom written software and available in most computer shops and includes no bugs/viruses.

security - 13Virtual MemoryVirtual memory is a feature of an operating system (OS) that allows a computer to compensate for shortages of physical memory by temporarily transferring pages of data from random access memory (RAM) to disk storage.
- 14Secondary StorageSecondary storage is one of the most valuable parts of the computer. It is storage that separates from the computer itself, where software and data can be stored on a permanent basis.
- 15MagneticSpeedy access to data, relatively low cost, and the ability to erase and rewrite data make magnetic disks the most widely used storage media on today’s computers.
- 16FloppyFloppy Disk is a round, flat piece of Mylar coated oxide, rust like substance containing tiny particles capable of holding a magnetic field, and cased in a protective plastic cover, the disk jacket. Data is stored on a floppy disk by the disk drive's read, which alters the magnetic movement of the particles.
- 17OpticalOptical memory is used for storing large volumes of data like sound, text, graphics, and videos. An optical disk is a removable disk that uses laser to read and write data.
- 18Solid StateSolid-state storage (SSS) is a type of computer storage media made from silicon microchips. SSS stores data electronically instead of magnetically, as spinning hard disk drives (HDDs) or magnetic oxide tape do.
