- 1What is Targeted Memory Reactivation and how might it boost creativity?Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) is a technique in which sensory stimuli such as smells or sounds are paired with memories during wake, then re-presented to participants during subsequent sleep. Because they are paired with a memory, when participants perceive these stimuli it triggers reactivation of that memory. This can lead to consolidation and has been shown to lead to better memory for that information the next day.
TMR could potentially be used to boost creativity by reactivating unexpected combinations of memory during sleep – this could lead to ‘restructuring’ with new connections being formed between them. This is thought to be particularly likely in REM sleep. - 2Explain the BiOtA ModelThe Broader-iOtA model (Biota) builds on the Information overlap to extract (iOtA) model by adding in REM sleep. Biota highlights 3 characteristics of REM 1) hippocampus and neocortex are not in communication during REM sleep, so the cortex is free to reactivate anything that is already represented there. 2) Acetylcholine levels are 2x as high in REM as in wake, promoting long distance plasticity, 3) REM is characterised by massive, random ponto-geniculo-occipetal (PGO) waves which percolate up from the brain stem to the cortex. These provide a source of random activation which could allow memories that are otherwise not clearly linked to be reactivated in random combinations. Such reactivation could then lead to detection of shared structure and formation of links (e.g. restructuring) that could be important for creativity.
