Algebra 1- Unit 8: Data and Probability

Justin Smith Algebra 1 8th grade English 28 cards

Cards in this deck (28)

  1. 1Box and Whisker PlotA visual display of the five number system. A simplified box plot taught to beginners.
  2. 2Complement of an EventThe opposite of an event. That is, the set of all outcomes of an experiment that are not included in an event.
  3. 3Complement of a SetThe elements not contained in a given set.
  4. 4ContinuousDescribes a connected set of numbers, such as an interval.
  5. 5Dependent EventAn event that is affected by previous events.
  6. 6DiscreteA set with elements that are disconnected.
  7. 7Experimental ProbabilityThe ratio of the number of times an outcome occurs to the total number of times the activity is performed.
  8. 8Independent EventAn event that is not affected by previous events.
  9. 9IntersectionsThe elements two, or more, sets have in common; indicated by the ∩ (cap) symbol.
  10. 10Line of Best FitA line on a graph showing the general direction that a group of points seem to follow.
  11. 11MeanAnother word for average
  12. 12Measure of Central TendencyA single value that describes the way in which a group of data cluster around a central value.
  13. 13MedianThe value within a set of numbers in which half the numbers are larger and half the numbers are smaller.
  14. 14ModeThe number that occurs the most often in the list.
  15. 15Negative CorrelationA relationship between two variables in which one variable increases as the other decreases, and vice versa.
  16. 16No CorrelatoinWhere there is no relationship between two variables in a set of data.
  17. 17OutcomeA single, specific possible result of an experiment.
  18. 18OutlierA data point that is distinctly separate from the rest of the data.
  19. 19Positive CorrelationWhen two sets of data are strongly linked together and the values increase together.
  20. 20ProbabilityThe likelihood of the occurrence of an event. The probability of event A would be written as P(A) and are always numbers between 0 and 1.
  21. 21QuartileThe collective term for the first quartile and third quartile of a set of data. That is the 25th and 75th percentile.
  22. 22RangeThe difference between the lowest and highest values.
  23. 23Sample SpaceThe set of all possible outcomes of an experiment.
  24. 24Scatter PlotA graph of paired data in which the data values are plotted as (x, y) points.
  25. 25SimulationThe use of a mathematical model to recreate a situation, often repeatedly, so that the likelihood of various outcomes can be more accurately estimated.
  26. 26Stem & Leaf PlotA diagram where each data value is split into a "leaf" (usually the last digit) and a "stem" (the other digits).
  27. 27Trend LinmeA line eon a graph showing the general direction that a group of points seem to be heading.
  28. 28Venn DiagramA diagram made up of two or more circles, used to compare two or more sets of data and their similarities.
