  1. 1BeatThe basic pulse underlying mensural music, that is, the temporal unit of a composition; also the movement of the hand or baton by which the conductor indicates that unit. The grouping of strong and weak beats into larger units constitutes Meter
  2. 2MeterIn measured music the grouping of beats into a recurring pattern defined by accentuation. An entire piece or section of a piece is constructed of a succession of bars, and the recurring accentual pattern, whether explicitly stated or present only by implication, is the framework within which rhythm is established and perceived.
  3. 3Rhythmversus divisive rhythm. In discussions of rhythmic notation, practice or style, few terms are as confusing or used as confusedly as ‘additive’ and ‘divisive’. Additive rhythms are said to be produced by the concatenation of a series of units, such as a rhythm in 5/8 which is produced by the regular alternation of (2/8 + 3/8). Divisive (or, more often, multiplicative) rhythms are produced by multiplying some integer unit such that a measure of 2/4 is equal to 2 × 2/8. In addition, additive is associated with asymmetrical rhythms, while divisive rhythms are often assumed
