Matter and Radiation

Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1Define an isotopeAn isotope is a variation of an atom that has the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons.
  2. 2What is specific charge? The specific charge of a particle is its charge divided by its mass.
  3. 3What is the strong nuclear force? The strong nuclear force is the force that overcomes the electrostatic force of repulsion and keeps the protons and neutrons together.
  4. 4Define alpha radiation.Alpha radiation is made up of two protons and two neutrons (helium nucleus).
  5. 5Define beta radiation.Beta radiation consists of of fast moving electrons.
  6. 6Define gamma radiation.Gamma radiation is electromagnetic radiation emitted when a nucleus has too much energy.
  7. 7What happens when an atom emits an alpha particle. The atom's nucleon number will decrease by 4 and its atomic number will decrease by 2.
  8. 8What happens when an atom emits a beta minus particle. The beta particle is immediately emitted after creation alongside the immediate emission of an antineutrino. The atomic number will increase by one due to the gain of a proton.
  9. 9What is the value of Planck's constant?6.63 x 10^-34 Js
  10. 10What is the equation to find the photon energy?E= hf
    (Photon energy = Planck's constant x frequency)
  11. 11What is the equation for the power of the beam?power of the beam= number of photons x Planck's constant x frequency
    (nhf)
  12. 12What is annihilation? When a particle and its corresponding antiparticle meet and their mass is converted into radiation energy- producing two photons.
  13. 13What is pair production?A photon creates a particle and corresponding antiparticle.
  14. 14What is the weak nuclear force? The force responsible for beta decay.
  15. 15What is the Feynman diagram for Beta minus decay? What is the Feynman diagram for Beta minus decay?
  16. 16What is the Feynman diagram for beta plus decayWhat is the Feynman diagram for beta plus decay
  17. 17What is the Feynman diagram for a neutron-neutrino interactionWhat is the Feynman diagram for a neutron-neutrino interaction
  18. 18What is the Feynman diagram for a proton-antineutrino interaction? What is the Feynman diagram for a proton-antineutrino interaction?
  19. 19What is the Feynman diagram for electron-proton collision? What is the Feynman diagram for electron-proton collision?
  20. 20What is the Feynman diagram for two electrons repelling? What is the Feynman diagram for two electrons repelling?
