Flashcards
Case studies (STM and LTM)
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Explain the Sperling case study.Duration and capacity.
The participants were flashed 9 letters on screen for 250 miliseconds and asked for a recall (particpants couldn't recall them all only 3 - 4). The letters were flashed again, the screen goes blank, a tone is sounded with 250 miliseconds of th flash as a signal to recall letter from a row, subject can only recall 3. sensory register has a very short suration - 2Explain the Simon Case study?Simon used the chunking method to test the capacity of STM, the chunking sizes were 1 word, 2 words and 8 words, the recall was 7, 4 and 3, the bigger the information of the chunks were the less was able to be remembered.
this proves that short term capacity is between 7+-2 - 3Explain the peterson and peterson testThe P&P, duration in stm, used trigrams, the pps were given trigrams to recall. 3,6,9,12,16,18.
80% could be remembered at 3.
40% could be remembered at 6.
10% could be remembered at 18.
duration last up to 18 seconds - 4Explain the Baddeley studyBaddeley looked at coding
he had a list of four different types of words
1 acoustically similar
2 acoustically disimilar
3 semantically similar
4 semantically disimilar
acoustically similar words were often mixed up, the short term memory codes acoustically
-LTM codes sematically - 5Explain the Bahrick study.Bahrick looked at duration.
High school, pps up to 47 years of leaving school asked them to look at photos of year books.
4 groups, recog (7-14 years) - 90, recog(47 years) - 60, recall (7-14 years) - 60, recall (47 years) - 20.
