Flashcards

Voting Systems Australia

clark.phoebe Law and Politics Higher School Certificate(HSC ) English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1Preferential VotingEncourages a two party system (i.e. over representation of the major parties, and under representation of the minor parties)
Offers little assistance to minor parties unless they have strong regional support.
  2. 2First Past the postSame outcome as preferential voting, only more so, i.e. over representation of major parties and under representation of minor parties.
Vote splitting occurs, which in Australia would disadvantage the lib/Nat Parties.
  3. 3Compulsory Preferential votingMeans voters are compelled to number every box on the ballot paper. An alternative system is optional preferential voting, where the voter can list preferences if they wish.
  4. 4Proportional RepresentationMore accurate representation of party support (mirror representation of parties). therefore PR is more representative of the will of the people.
Minor parties and independents are more likely to be elected.
  5. 5—
