Cards in this deck (23)

  1. 1Types of HCIThere are several categories:
    Command Line interface
    Menu driven interface
    Graphical user interface (GUI)
    On-screen Forms
  2. 2Command Line Interface (CLI)User Types in commands for the computer
    Also know as DOS
Examples - MS-DOS, Unix, Linux, Command Prompt
  3. 3Command PromptConsists of a simple prompt screen
Can be very quick and flexible if you know what your doing
Good for programmers and IT specialists
    Very hard to learn
  4. 4CLI AdvantagesDoesn't use graphics so less demanding on system resources (faster/less storage)
Contains lots of options that aren't accessible without 3rd party software
Complex commands can be entered quickly
  5. 5CLI disadvantagesRequires devotion and learning
    Commands need to be memorized
    Can be frustrating
    Reference to manuals often needed
  6. 6Who is CUI ideal/ not ideal for?Ideal for -
    Experienced users

    Beginners
    Intermediate users
  7. 7Menu Driven InterfaceUser is provided with options to choose from
Useful in situations where there needs to be a limited choice
Shouldn't be navigation or need to add text based commands
Used for mobile phones and call centres
  8. 8MDI things to considerNeeds balance between too many options and number of sub-menus needed
    Should have a consistent layout
Should use the same prompt for same operation (back button etc)
Prompt should be in the same position on screen
  9. 9MDI Advantages and DisadvantagesAdvantages
Restricts the options a user can select
Used effectively with touch screen systems
    Disadvantages
Can slow down use of system as set routes have to be followed
  10. 10Graphical User InterfaceThis is a form of interface that uses high resolution graphics/icons/pointers to make the operation as friendly as possible
    Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers (WIMP)
    First designed by Apple Mac
  11. 11GUI Advantages and Ideal ForAdvantages
    User friendly
    Intuitive
Use of sound and video made use of
Most operating systems come with this sort of interface
    Ideal for inexperienced users
  12. 12GUI Disadvantages and Not Ideal ForDisadvantages
Demanding in terms of system resources, eg hard disk and memory
Not ideal for experienced users (may resent working through levels of directories and menus)
  13. 13On-Screen FormsThere are widely used to enter data into a computer system, with forms being used to capture data.
Its good idea for an on-screen form to mimic the style of a paper form
These often include check boxes, menus or lists
  14. 14On-Screen Form Advantages and Ideal ForAdvantages
    Similar to paper forms
    Intuitive
    Variety of data-entry techniques
    Automatically validated (reduces errors)
Ideal for filling in questionnaires and shopping online
  15. 15On-Screen Forms Disadvantages and Not ideal forDisadvantages
Demanding in terms of system resources eg hard disk and memory
Not ideal for - experienced users
  16. 16Natural Language InterfaceThis is where humans communicate with computers in their natural language
Its flexible and powerful, yet computer needs to be precise with a limited number of commands and strict syntax rules
Designed to understand human phrases through text or speech
  17. 17Natural Language Interface Examples 1Search Engines - Ask.com users Natural Language Processing (NLP) to interpret questions into written language
NLP tries to understand the context of a question
  18. 18Natural Language Interface Examples 2Help Search - MS Office interprets questions written in natural language
Game Consoles - Natural movement turns a players body into a games controller ie Kinect
  19. 19Command Driven NLICommand Driven Natural Language Interfaces exist:
    Speech synthesis
    Subset of natural language
EG - car controls radio, phone calls etc

  23. 23Natural User Interface DisadvantagesDisadvantages
    Ambiguous and imprecise
    Language always changes
    Same words have different meanings
