Sojourner Truth: A former slave that delivered important speeches for women's rights and the abolitionist movement. She was the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.
Catherine Beecher: helped to create elementary schools and mandatory education for all white male children
Dorothea Dix: helped to create public health treatments for mentally ill patients
Frederick Douglass: An African-American reformer and abolitionist. He also published the newspaper, The North Star, in 1848.
Harriet Tubman: The most famous leader of the Underground Railroad
Nat Turner: Led a Slave revolt in Virginia, killing whites on plantations.
