Flashcards
Composite Materials Revision Cards
Cards in this deck (16)
- 1what are composite materialstwo or more materials combined through bonding - to enhance their mechanical and physical properties.
most composites have high strength to weight ratios. - 2what are the 3 main types of composites?fiber based composites.
particle based composites.
sheet based composites. - 3what is GRP and what is it used for?GRP - glass reinforced plastic.
also known as fibreglass is made from glass matting and resing layers.
mainly used in car body parts and boats. - 4how is GRP made?made by spinning glass into strands. strands are then coated in resin to help them stick together.
this is then made to form to a mold.
layers of woven glass matting are placed into the mold and resin is applied between each layer. - 5advantages and disadvantages of GRP?advantages - high strength to weight ratio, fireproof, durable cannot be weathered. very strong and stiff.
disadvantages - a thermoset therefore damaging to the environment as it cannot be recycled. can irritate the skin as it is made from glass therefore alternatives are now more commonly used. - 6what is carbon fiber and what is it used for?carbon fiber is a modern material made from carbon woven mat and resin layers.
uses - sports equipment, car body parts such as spoilers, crash helmets ect. - 7how is carbon fiber made?woven matting is cut with ceramic scissors.
placed into half mold.
impregnated with resin.
forced into the shape of the mold.
mold halves are fixed together.
held at 170 degrees for up to 8 hours to promote rigid cross links in the resin. - 8advantages and disadvantages of carbon fiber?advantages - high strength to weight ratio, high tensile strength, good impact resistance
disadvantages - very expensive, only available in black and not easily recycled as it is a THERMOSET. - 9what is kevlar and what is it used for?a modern material made from nylon like molecules that are melted and spun into fibers.
uses - bullet proof vests and fireman's clothing. - 10how is kevlar made?aromatic and aromid molecules melted and spun into fibers.
long chain molecules are held together by strong hydrogen bonds.
fibers are orientated parallel to previous fibers to give good strength. - 11advantages of Kevlar?advantages - extremely good strength to weight ratio, acts as a net in bullet proof vests to protect from bullets (bruises but does not kill), lightweight, strong and good flame resistance therefore good for firemen clothing
- 12what is concrete made from and what is it used for?concrete is made up of aggregate, sand ad cement.
used for foundations in buildings - 13what are the characteristics of concrete?can be molded into complex shapes...
similar properties to stone...
components are easier to extract than stone...
good under compression therefore making it suitable for foundations in buildings as the compression strength needs to be high.
not good under tension therefore not good for bridges unless they are reinforced with metal bars that take the tension. - 14what is a cermet? what are the advantages and disadvantages of cermets?mixture of metal and ceramic based particles - used in cutting tools as it keeps a sharp edge well.
Sintering is the only way it can be formed.
advantages - resistant to high temps, tough and shock resistant.
disadvantages - brittle therefore cracks easily. - 15what is a metal/polymer composite and what is it used for?laminate made up of an aluminium sheet sandwiching a polyethylene core.
uses - car skins, boats, partition walls in a house. - 16advantages of metal/polymer composite?lightweight
excellent rigidity
good strength
impact resistant
good sound and vibration dampening
good thermal insulation
