Flashcards

X Ray

Soumya Bhadra Biophysics University Graduate English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1X Ray'sKey Words
    -Electrons
    -Cathode
    -Anode
    -Overheating
    -Vacuum
    Decelerated
  2. 2Structure of X Ray Tube (Coolidge Tube)Cathode: Heated to cause a release of electrons (THERMIONIC EMISSION)
Anode: Made of tungsten (Constantly rotated to prevent overheating)
    All enclosed in a VACUUM
  3. 3The Process1) Cathode: Heated to cause a release of electrons (THERMIONIC EMISSION)
    2) Electrons are accelerated towards anode by a high voltage
    3) When Electron hits anode, it is decelerated so it loses energy.
    4) This lost energy is emitted as an X RAY
  4. 4Why Do the Electrons Lose Energy? (In Detail)Intro:
    =Anode made of tungsten
    =Cathode releases electrons
=Tungsten has 74 electrons arranged in cells
    =YOU HAVE A COLLISION
  5. 5Step 1Cathode releases electrons because it is heated and these electrons accelerate towards the ANODE because of high voltage
  6. 6Step 2The released electrons from Cathode then HIT electrons of inner orbit of Tungsten
  7. 7Step 3There is now a gap in the inner electron shell of Tungsten
  8. 8Step 4So this gap must BE FILLED so an electron from the outer shell drops down INTO the INNER SHELL
  9. 9Step 5This causes a loss of energy, this loss of energy is the emitting of an X Ray
  10. 10Jazz PointsWilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered in 1895
He used the mathematical symbol x to represent something unknown
Oudin and Barthelemy right afterwards discovered X ray bones of hand
X rays also used for CRYSTALLOGRAPHY which is info about structure of biologically important molecules.
