Cards in this deck (13)
- 1What is Foucault's theory between knowledge and power (&yr)?1997
- Power and knowledge are inseperable
- Power is not a possession that people wield over others but is relational and productive
- Without power things cannot get done
- Discipline is imposed through knowledge/power
[Lyons 2001 idea of a panoptican as a surveillance mechanism] - 2What is Hales theory of the relationship between knowledge and power?1993
- Power is a resource
- A power resource has 3 defining characteristics: 1. Scarcity (k possessed by a ltd population), 2. Satisfaction of wants/needs (e.g. to achieve personal status), 3. No alternatives (e.g. a monopolistic knowledge holder) - 3What are the 4 types of power resource that Hales identifies?1. Physical- force, threat to safety
2. Economic- access to wealth/resources
3. Normative- control over ideas/beliefs
4. Knowledge- both admin and technical - 4What are the ways Hales says you can exert influence over others?- Personal power (power as a result of knowledge)
- Positional power (power based on the position within the organisation) - 5What is Habermas' theory of the relationship between power and knowledge?1989
- Power (and status) distorts communication
- Ideal speech situation: where there is some symmetry between shared knowledge, communication media, mutual respect of views of each other and logic prevails in reaching decisions.
- In reality most organisations are hierarchial
- However is KI firms, the power relationship might shift because knowledge may be more important and more scarce and the balance between the worker and manager is shifting. - 6What is the privileged position of the expert? (name, date)Starbuck 1993
- They are concerned that others might see thier need to acquire knowledge as evidence of thier knowledge deficiency
- They are reluctant to spend time acquiring new, unproven knowledge
- Their specialisation reduces their flexibility (not my area)
- They protect thier niche
- Their speciality prevents them from noticing 'irrelevant' significant knowledge (blinkered) - 7Draw the linking power, politics and conflict diagram.

- 8What is a KI firm?Companies where most work can be said to be of an intellectual naure and where well-qualified employees form the major part of the workforce. Employ a high number of knowledge workers.
- 9What is a knowledge worker?someone whose work is primarily intellectual, creative and non-routine, and which involves both the utilisation and creation of knowledge.
- 10What are the 3 dimensions of work? (name, date)Frenkel et al 1995
- Creativity
- Predominant form of knowledge used: Contextual knowledge (tacit), Theoretical knowledge (codified)
- Type of skills involved: Intellective skills (abstract reasoning), Social skills (motivate/manage others), Action-based skills (physical dexterity). - 11Using these characteristics Frenkel et al characterise knowledge workers as those who...- Have high levels of creativity
- Make extensive use of intellective skills
- Use predominantly theoretical rather than contextual knowledge. - 12What is technical knowledge and client knowledge? (Empson 2001)

- 13Why might knowledge workers be considered good employees? (Name, date)Alvesson 2000
- They find their work intrinsically rewarding
- Aspects of high value are te norm in their working environments so they don't exploit it unduly
- They appreciate a sense of reciprocity- they are paid well so expect to work hard
- This work ethic reinforces their sense of identity as KWs.
