Question Answer
What influence does meal intake have on Net Protein Balance? Resistance training causes an increase in sensitivity to meals and thus the food intake causes an increase in PS and a reduction in PB.
What effect does training status and intensity of resistance training have on Net Protein Balance? PS is directly increased with the stress put on the muscles (increasing intensity). Additionally with training the amount of MPS which occurs when working at the same intensity as untrained is less, thus programs need to be progressive, also adds evidence to the findings that suggest that stress invoked on the muscle is crucial in MPS levels.
How can we measure Protein Breakdown? We can measure Protein Breakdown through measuring Ammonia in urea, the bi-product of Amino Acid breakdown. We can also measure both Protein Synthesis and Protein Breakdown through Nitrogen balance. This is where you look at Nitrogen levels ingested in food and expelled in urine/poop. When Nitrogen intake is greater than Nitrogen expulsion you are gaining protein mass.
What is Net Protein Balance? It is where Protein Synthesis and Protein Breakdown are equal. When Protein Synthesis is greater than Protein Breakdown this results in Muscular Hypertrophy, when Protein Breakdown is greater than Protein Synthesis this results in Muscular Atrophy.
How can Protein Breakdown facilitate Protein Synthesis? Protein Breakdown helps in Protein Synthesis but increasing the availability of AA's. So to increase muscular protein we need to increase both PS and PB.
What happens to Muscle Protein Synthesis during exercise? Muscle PS does not respond to exercise, in fact it is inhibited during exercise. mTOR activates MPS which is inhibited during exercise (additionally AMPK inhibits mTOR which is at its highest during exercise). This means that MPS occurs 2 hours after exercise.
What effect does Resistance Training have on Net Protein Balance? Resistance Training causes an increase in Net Protein Balance, additionally MPS can remain elevated up to 48 hours following exercise. Furthermore it has been found that when Weightlifting to exhaustion that this causes an increase in MPS- signifies that MPS is affected by the stress that the exercise induces on the body.
Effect of both Resistance and Endurance Training: Both Endurance and Resistance Training cause a small increase in protein, which in time leads to adaptation- BUT IN VERY DIFFERENT WAYS.
