Ch 10-IP Routing
Cards in this deck (31)
- 1What is Administrative DistanceIt is a value that indicates the trustworthiness of routing information received on one router from its neighboring router
- 2What is the AD range from most trustworthy to least?0-255.
- 3When would a router load balance to a network and what is it?If the AD and other metrics for two different routing paths are the same value. Load balancing is when the router sends a test packet down each route to test for the better route at that time.
- 4What two situations result in the lowest AD you can have?A physically connected network and a static route.
- 5When dealing with distance vector protocols, how is the best route determined?Distance...or the number of hops.
- 6What are the three tables that link-state routing protocols keep?1) Directly attached neighbors.
2) Topology of internetwork
3) Routing table - 7What is unique about EIGRP in terms of network deployment? It is cisco proprietary and as a result, will only run on cisco equipment
- 8Describe the process known as "routing by rumor"When distance vector routing protocols send their entire routing tables to their neighbors and then those routing tables are combined with their own routing tables. It is known as rumor b/c the routers never verify the received info.
- 9Do distance vector protocols use hop count or bandwidth to determine which route to use if the AD's are the same? Or both?Hop count is the only additional metric considered.
- 10What is the term when a distance vector protocol load balances two paths to a remote network.Round-robin load balancing.
- 11When the distance vector routing protocol starts up, what is the only information it has?The exit interface of its directly connected networks
- 12What are the 3 pieces of information a distance vector routing protocol has once convergence has taken place? The address of all the networks in the internetwork, the exit interface to get to those networks, and the hop count to get to those networks.
- 13What is convergence? The act of updating a routing table. All data transmission ceases while conversion is taking place.
- 14How often does RIP send out routing table updates?Every 30 seconds.
- 15What does RIP use to determine the best route to the network and what is its limit?Hop count-15.
- 16What is a major drawback of RIP in terms of subnets.RIPv1 uses only classful routing-it does not transmit subnet information, so all devices on the internetwork must have the same subnet mask.
- 17What is the AD for RIPv1 and v2?120
- 18What is VLSM?Variable Length Subnet Mask-it is a way to make your internetwork such that the devices can have different subnet masks-called classless routing. It allows for more efficient assigning of host IP addresses.
- 19Of the routing protocols discussed in this chapter-which are considered classless and which are classful?IGRP and RIPv1 are classful, RIPv2 and OSPF and EIGRP and IS-IS
- 20What is a discontiguous network?Discontiguous=not in sequence. So a discontiguous network is an internetwork where classful subnets are connected via a different classful network
- 21How is EIGRP a hybrid of both distance vector and link-state protocolsIt sends out distance vector updates (with cost of reaching them) but only does so upon startup and a network topology change.
- 22EIGRP keeps something called a neighbor table. What info does that table store? The address and interface of the connected neighbors.
- 23EIGRP also keeps a Topology Table. What info is in there? In the topology table is the neighbor table, as well as the best path to each remote network AND a backup path to each remote network
- 24What is the core routing protocol of the internet?BGP
- 25What are the packets called that link-state routing protocols send out to determine which routers in the internetwork are available for routing packets through?Hello packets. The result of these hello packets is what is used to populate a link-state routing protocol's neighbor table.
- 26What information is in the topology table? It is essentially a map of the entire internetwork. It has every destination route and a route through which that network can be reached.
- 27How are OSPF routing tables created when the protocol starts?First, a shortest-path tree is constructed, and then the routing table is populated with the resulting best paths.
- 28How is OSPF's convergence rate compared to that of RIP and RIPv2?It is much faster. Comparable with EIGRP.
- 29When do link-state routing protocols send routing table updates vs their distance vector counterparts?Link-state is event triggered and distance vector is regularly updated.
- 30What is CLNS, what protocol is it used with, and what is an advantage of it?Connectionless Network Service= connectionless delivery of data packets between routers.Used with IS-IS. CLNS does not need a separate database for IP and IPv6 unlike OSPF.
- 31Match the IPv6 address to the routing protocol. How did you do?
