Flashcards
P1.1 & 2

Cards in this deck (28)
- 1What do all objects emit? All objects emit infra-red raditation
- 2What can affect the amount of radiation given off by an object? How hot the object
- 3What are the best absorbers and emitters of infrared radiation?Dark, matt surfaces
- 4What are poor absorbers and emitters of infrared radiation?Light, shiny surfaces
- 5What are good reflectors of infrared radiation?Light, shiny surfaces
- 6What are the three ways heat energy can be transferred?Conduction, convection and radiation
- 7What is conduction?Heat transfer by particles vibrating against each other in a solid
- 8What is convection and how does it work?WHEN ENERGETIC PARTICLES MOVE FROM A HOT REGION TO A COOLER REGION TAKING HEAT ENERGY WITH THEM
Heat transfer in liquids and gases as the hotter liquid or gas rises and is replaced by a cooler liquid or gas to be heated - 9Why are metals good conductors? They have free moving electrons so they can rapidly transfer kinetic energy
- 10What is radiation?Heat radiation emitted by solids, liquids and gases
- 11What does a vaccum flask try to reduce?Convection
Conduction
Evaporation
Radiation - 12How does a vacuum flask reduce these factors?Air pockets around the liquid as it is a poor conductor of heat so it reduces conduction
The air is trapped so it does not circulate so it reduces convection
The lid of the flask is closed so it reduces evaporation
The inside of the flask is silver so it reflects heat and radiation isn't lost
- 13What do U-values measure and what indicates how good it is as an insulator?Measures how effective a material is as an insulator
Lower the U-value, the better the insulator - 14What are some ways a home can insulate heat?- Double glazing = Air or a vacuum is put between two panes of glass and since air is a poor conductor of heat
- Cavity wall insulation = insulating material is blown between the brick and inside wall which reduces heat loss - 15How do animals cope with temperature in their surroundings?Cold = hairs stand up to trap insulating air
Hot = Blood rushes to surface to increase heat loss
small Animals with a large surface area will lose heat quicker
Large animals with a small surface area will conserve heat longer
Large ears = more heat lost - 16Kinetic theory of solids- Strong attraction between particles
- Particles close together and neatly arranged
- Particles vibrate in place - 17Kinetic theory of liquids-Moderate attraction of particles
- Particles close but not neatly arranged
- Particles able to slide past each other - 18Kinetic theory of gases-Weak attraction between particles
- Particles far from each other
- Particles move all around and bump into each other - 19Factors which affect the rate of condensationTemperature of gas is lower
Temperature of surface touched is lower
Density is higher
Airflow is less - 20Factors that affect the rate of evaporationTemperature of liquid is higher
Density is lower
Surface area is larger
Airflow over the liquid is greater - 21Factors which affect rate at which object transfers energySurface area and volume
Material of object
Nature of surface object is in contact with - 22What causes a faster rate at which energy is transferred?Bigger temperature difference between an object and its surroundings
- 23How do Solar Panels work?Contains water which is heated by the Sun through radiation. The heated water is used around the house
- 24What is SHC?Specific Heat Capacity
Amount of energy required to change the temperature of one kg of a substance by 1oC - 25Energy can be..Transferred usefully, stored or dissipated
Cannot be created or destroyed - 26Equation for efficiencyuseful energy out/ useful energy in x 100
- 27Equation for payback timeCost of installation / savings per year
- 28What ways can wasted energy be useful? Can be transferred into the surroundings as heat
