Definition of a closed system or "control mass" A closed system is a system in which only energy can cross the system boundary in the form of heat or work. No mass can cross the system boundary.
Definition of an open system or "control volume" An open system is a system in which energy can cross the system boundary in the form of heat and work. Mass can also cross over the system boundary.
