The Provisional Government The Duma leaders set up the Provisional Government after the Tsar abdicated. It was provisional as they intended to have proper elections
The Soviets a worker's councils in towns and cities, (mainly Bolsheviks and Mensheviks)
Problem: Sharing Power with the Soviets The soviets only carried out orders from the PG if they agreed with it. There was hostility between the two making it harder to get things done.
Problem: Inherited economics situation Food shortages, high prices, transport problems, low wages and poor working conditions all remained.
Problem: Peasants and land The peasants were taking over landowner's estates. The PG failed to make a decision on this as they wanted to wait for the new elected government to make this big reform.
Problem: The revolutionary parties began to thrive and threaten the PG with less censorship Any political views could be published Political prisoners were released from prison
Problem: the war The PG honoured Russians commitments to its allies. This lead to more defeats and hostility amongst the Russian population This worsened the problems in the cities.
The PG failed to address these problems So Alexander Kerensky became the new president.
Lenin's 'April Theses' PEACE BREAD LAND 'All power to the soviets' to get more attention in main cities
German Austrian Offensive, July 1917 The PG tried to gain support by waging an offensive against Germany and Austria. It was hoped that this would lead to military victories. It lead to more defeats, advance of Germany, and more desertions from the Russian armed forces.
Attempt to overthrow the PG, September 1917 Lead by General Kornilov, Comander-in- Chief of the army. His plan to restore a strong government appealed to much of the upper and middle classes Kornilov led a march on Petrograd It was stopped by the Bolsheviks using weapons lent to them by the PG
