Question Answer
How is natural and artificial selection similar and different? both have pressure on the organism that causes change in said organism, but natural selection starts with environmental factors and artificial selection starts with human interference
Describe Aristotle contribution to the theory of natural selection. he was thought to be the first naturalist and came up with the idea of the great chain of beings. which linked organisms in a step formation. He was the first to say organisms lived in an environment that suited them which would some day be called adaption
How did Linnaeus contribute to the Theory of Natural Selection? he was a big supporter of the great chain of beings. he was the father of taxonomy as he came up with a meaningful way of organizing organisms using a two part naming system
How did Lamarck contribute to the theory of natural selection? he was a naturalist who came up with the law of use and disuse which said that characteristics that went unused eventually evolved out and used characteristics became more developed. he was also the first to talk about inherited characteristics but his theory was flawed, saying that for example a giraffe stretched its neck so much in its lifetime that its neck would stretch and this characteristic would be passed onto children. genetics was not known then.
How did Hutton contribute to the theory of natural selection? he was geologist and the first person to develop paleontology, saying that fossils were imprints of the past. he came up with the idea of gradualism which stated that change in organisms was a slow but continuous process that could not be observed in one lifetime
How did Cuvier contribute to the theory of natural selection? he was a physician that provided a great understanding of the human body. he wrote a 22 volume book on fish and developed paleontology more. came up with the idea of catastrophism meaning that when a species dies a space becomes available and is invaded by other species that then develope
How did Lyell contribute to the theory of natural selection? came up with the idea of uniformitariansim which is the idea that geological processes are so slow that they don't seem to be happening at all. He wrote a book on geology as well
What did Darwin write about? how wrote the book the origin of the species. in it he describe how individuals from a species have desirable and undesirable traits. the successful organisms pass on there traits while the unsuccessful one have less offspring or die before they can reproduce. also said population has a high capacity fro growth but mortality rates in offspring keep population down. an organisms environment will determine what characteristics will help the organism survive and reproduce
In Darwin's times, hereditary traits were not understood yet. What would have helped Darwin? Mendel sent manuscripts to Darwin which he never read. these manuscripts explained hereditary traits and recessive genes
