Science Flashcards
Cards in this deck (25)
- 1What are lattices?A lattice is a regular arrangement of particles, whether they are atoms, ions or molecules.
- 2What are atoms?Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everyday objects.
- 3What are elements? An element is a substance that is made entirely from one type of atom.
- 4What is the difference between non metallic and metallic elements?Metallic metals have a shine of their own while non-metallic metals do not have a shine of their own.Metallic metals are quite ductile.Non-metallic metals are not ductile and can be broken upon a collision.
- 5How many synthetic elements are there?24
- 6What are molecules?A cluster of atoms.
- 7How many known elements are there?118
- 8What is the lightest element?hydrogen
- 9What is the heaviest element?Lawrencium
- 10What are monatomic elements?Monatomic or monoatomic elements are elements that are stable as single atoms.
- 11What are examples of monatomic elements?Helium, neon and argon.
- 12What are molecular elements?Elements that are identical with the same size, shape number and type of atoms.
- 13What are examples of molecular elements?Hydrogen, Nitrogen , Oxygen, Fluorine , Chlorine , Bromine and Iodine.
- 14What is the periodic table?A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows, so that elements with similar atomic structure appear in vertical columns.
- 15What do the numbers at the bottom represent? It represents the atomic weight.
- 16What do the numbers at the top represent? The atomic number.
- 17Why are the element symbols different from the word?Because the periodic table was originally written in Latin and they used the first or last letters of the word.
- 18How many non metallic elements are there?17
- 19How many metallic elements are there?92
- 20What does brittle mean?Likely to break, snap, or crack when pressure is applied.
- 21What does malleable mean?Capable of being shaped or formed by hammering or pressure.
- 22What is a physical property?A physical property is any property of matter or energy that can be measured.
- 23What is an examples of Physical property?Examples of physical properties are: colour, smell, freezing point, boiling point & melting point.
- 24what is a chemical property?A chemical property is any of a material's properties that becomes evident during, or after, a chemical reaction
- 25What is an example of a chemical property?Examples of chemical properties are:
heat of combustion, reactivity with water, and electromotive force.
