Question Answer
Define lattice enthalpy the enthalpy change that accompanies the formation of one mole of an ionic compound from its gaseous ions under standard conditions
Define the enthalpy change of atomisation The enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of gaseous atoms is formed form its element in its standard state.
Define standard enthalpy change of formation the enthalpy change that accompanies the formation of 1 mole of compound from its constituent elements in their standard states under standard conditions
Define second ionisation energy the enthalpy change that accompanies the removal of one electron from each ion in one mole of 1+ gaseous ions to form 1 mole of gaseous 2+ ions.
Define 1st electron affinity the enthalpy change accompanying the addition of one electron to each atom in 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous 1- ions.
Define standard enthalpy change of solution The enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of compound is completely dissolved in water under standard conditions
Define standard entropy change of reaction The entropy change that accompanies a reaction in the molar quantities expressed in a chemical equation under standard conditions, and with all reactants and products being in their standard states.
Define first ionisation energy the enthalpy change that accompanies the removal of one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions.
Define standard enthalpy change of hydration the enthalpy change that takes place when one mole of isolated gaseous ions is dissolved in water to form 1 mole of aqueous ions, under standard conditions. (P.S. this definition regularly comes up in exam papers along with lattice enthalpy)
Define oxidation Loss of electrons
Define 2nd electron affinity the enthalpy change accompanying the addition of one electron to each ion in 1 mole of gaseous 1- ions to from 1 mole of gaseous 2- ions.
What are the standard conditions? 298K 100kPa / 1atm 1 mol/dm^3 concentrations
Define entropy, S. the quantitative measure of the degree of disorder in a system. ( -S = less disorder/more order and +S= more disorder)
Define reduction The gain of electrons
Define standard electrode potential The emf of a half cell compared with a standard hydrogen half cell, measured under standard conditions (298K, solution concentrations of 1 mol/dm^3, 100kPa)
