What is Public Health? Government involvement in the health of the public e.g. water,food,housing
Why did the government need to get involved in public health? Cholera pandemic, serious medical problems and epidemics,working class life expectancy (17 years), Poor living conditions and the public health act.
Examples of poor conditions that led to ill health. Overcrowded( no building regulations), poor sanitation, dirty sewage on the streets, lack of food,back to back housing,houses too small, cellar dwellings, midden privies, no toilets
How did authorities deal with infectious diseases in the 1600's Closed theatres, killed dogs and cats, burned barrels of tar in the streets,people boarded up in their homes, people fasted, praying, mass graves , evacuation
What was done to reduce smog in London in the 20th century. Cleaner air-the clean air act 1954, smokeless zones in cities,no fires in houses unless burning a special fuel, pollution dropped by 65% in 1971
