Maria Angela Samonte Philosophy A-Level English 14 cards

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1VCa philosophical movement, claims, lang, only meaningful if it can be verified by a sense-observation (act of gaining a piece of k through your senses e.g. seeing a beautiful sunset) or it is a tautology
  2. 2The VC movement, influenced by sci, emphasised, importance of confirming any S by observation, e.g. in an exp.A: apply, same approach to all use of lang when making Ss of fact. Moritz, Schlick + other supporters of VC: if you can't demonstrate w/ sense-observations how, T, then the S is factually meaningless.
  3. 3A verificationist: lang tells, something about, way, world is. Ss that don't tell us something may be show to be either T or F by sense-observation =factually meaningless or tautologies.
  4. 41, aims, show which areas of philosophical or scientific enquiry are factually meaningless... not to be investigated.E.g. beauty of ________ isn't something that can be decided on the basis of observation, nor is it a S that can be answered w/ T or F in any certain way.
  5. 5VCists: any S that can't be proved T or F is 'meaningless': has no meaning in a factual sense.:( early VC's strict scientific approach, Swinburne, e.g. 'all ravens are black'. generally, accept, black, no way to ever confirm this S bc, always the possibility... meaningless S.
  6. 6:( no S can be made about history. No way, verify this fact by observation... factually meaningless.Ayer supported VC. if a S isn't verifiable, either meaningless or a tautology.
  7. 7Meaningless = Ayer,not "factually significant"
-'Lang, Truth + Logic'. wasn't denying that people make other types of S that are meaningful to them, e.g. 'G answers my prayers'; just that unverifiable Ss don't have factual significance:
  8. 8"The sentence expressing it may be emotionally significant to him; but it is not literally significant."-'Lang, Truth and Logic'
  9. 95. Meaningful but unverifiable Quite possible for a S to be meaningful w/o being verifiable. Swinburne ('G-talk Is Not Evidently Nonsense') gives the example of toys in a cupboard. The toys only come out at night when no one observes them.toys only come out at night when no one observes them.
The sit is meaningful even though it is fictitious + unverifiable.
  10. 10E.g. Schrodinger's cat. Schrodinger: imagine a cat in a box w/ a radioactive source. At any time, the radioactive source could emit a radioactive particle that would kill the cat. Can't know, dead or alive. If, open the box to find out, may trigger the release of the radioactive particle, thus killing the cat. Whether the cat is alive or dead at any P is unverifiable.
  11. 11FC =the philosophical T that an assertion is meaningless if there is no way in which it can be falsified. E.g. 'elves live in the forest but they only come out when no one is looking'
  12. 12FC T, discussed by Anthony Flew, R. M. Hare, + Basil Mitchell in an article entitled"Theology and FC: A Symposium"
  13. 13Flew: G died a "death by a thousand qualifications" = challenged about, G's existence or nature, R: modify the way they talk about G to respond to the challenge.Flew: end up modifying their Ss about G so much when challenged, Ss no longer resemble the original claim about G - their belief in G died ""
  14. 14The Via Negativacan only talk about G in -ve terms. Transcendent so you cannot say what G is.
