Question Answer
What is a wheel? A type of lever with an axle acting as its fulcrum.
What is an axle? A shaft on which a wheel rotates.
What type of advantage can a wheel provide? A speed and a force advantage depending on the situation.
What is an example of a wheel giving a force advantage? When you apply force to turn on a tap, the handle acts a a wheel. It increases the force you apply at its center, allowing the spindle or axle to turn.
What is an example of a wheel giving a speed advantage? The motor of an electric fan turns the central axle relatively slowly. This speed is multiplied through the spinning blades. The longer the blades, the greater the speed multiplied.
What is a pulley? A wheel with a groove over which a rope or cable can slide.
What is the advantage of using a pulley? It changes the direction of a force.
How do you increase the force applied to a pulley? You have to use more than one pulley.
How does using two pulleys help? You are reducing the amount of effort needed while applying it over a greater distance.
What is the block and tackle arrangement? A system of two or more pulleys using rope or cable to lift heavy objects.
What is a disadvantage of having two wheels connected to each other by a belt. The belt could slip.
How can this be avoided? You can use gears, or cogs to transfer spinning motion.
What are gears? A wheel with teeth used to turn another gear wheel.
How can gears be joined together? They can be meshed directly together or be joined by chain.
What is a gear train? A system of interconnected gears.
What happens to one gear when the other spins? The first one spins in one direction while the second one spins in the other direction.
What is the driving gear? The gear that supplies force to another gear.
What is the driven gear? The gear that receives force from a driving gear.
When are gears used as force multipliers? When the driving gear is smaller than the driven gear, the combination act as a force advantage.
At which speed at the two cogs rotating? The smaller cog will rotate quicker than the larger cog but the larger cog will turn more slowly but the force it has would be more larger.
When is using this gear combination useful? When a car is going up a hill or help in using a wench.
When are gears used as speed multipliers? When the driving gear is larger than the driven gear.
When is using this gear useful? When you are using an eggbeater.
What are sprockets? A toothed wheel used to link onto a chain on a bicycle.
How do you use first gear? You select the largest rear-wheel sprocket and the smallest chain wheel sprocket.
How do you use highest gear? You select the smallest rear wheel sprocket and largest chain wheel sprocket.
Hope you learned something :-)
