Question Answer
Self Report Ways to obtain data by asking participants to provide information about themselves. These include questionnaires and reviews.
Rating Scale A numerical scale in which a participant indicates a choice by selecting one number (provides quantitative data)
Likert Scale A type of question that measures attitudes using a statement to which participants respond by choosing one option, typically SD, D, N, A, SA
Semantic Differential Scale A scale that allows participants to choose on a scale between two extremes, such as an opposing pair of descriptive words.
Open Questions Questions that allow the participant to provide their own response instead of ticking boxes and providing scales.
Closed Questions Questions that offer a small number of explicitly stated alternative responses and no opportunity to expand on answers (provides quantitative data)
Quantitative Data Data representing how much there is of something. Such data is recorded in numerical form.
Qualitative Data Data representing how things are expressed - the quality of an experience or behaviour. This data is represented in words rather than numbers.
Questionnaire A self report method that uses written questions - like a written down interview.
