Flashcards
Chemistry Ch1 Test

Cards in this deck (12)
- 1What is filtration? The technique used to separate the insoluble substances from the soluble substances in solvents.
- 2Define filtrateThe liquid that has passed through the filter.
- 3Define residueThe part of the mixture that remains in the filter paper.
- 4What is crystallisation? To obtain a pure sample of salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) from the salt solution following filtration through evaporation. The method is to heat it on an evaporating dish on a water bath above a bunsen burner.
- 5Why can alpha particles not pass through gold foil easily?Positively charged particles are together in one concentrated area in the centre of the atom. Therefore electrons must be orbiting around a nucleus, which includes very dense positively charged protons.
- 6Define isotopeEach of two or more forms of the same element that contain the same number of protons but different number of neutrons in their nuclei, which effects their overall mass number but not their similar chemical properties.
- 7Atomic massThe number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
- 8Mass numberthe total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
- 9Define subatomic particleParticles of an atom: protons, neutrons, electrons
- 10Why do isotopes have similar chemical properties? They have the same number of protons and electrons which gives them their chemical properties.
- 11The structure of an atom
