Flashcards
Chemistry - Atomic Structure
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1ATOMIC STRUCTUREWithin the nucleus, there are protons, neutrons. Electrons orbit around the nucleus.
The nucleus has a positive charge due to the neutrons not having any charge. - 2PROTONS, NEUTRONS AND ELECTRON CHARGESProtons - (+1) - Protons are positve
Neutrons - (0) - Neutrons are neutral
Electrons - (-1) so that means electrons must be negative. - 3ATOMIC NUMBER OR PROTON NUMBERThe number of protons in the nucleus.
The atoms in the periodic table are arranged in order of their atomic number. - 4ELECTRONSThe electrons in an atom are arranged in ENERGY LEVELS or SHELLS.
You can tell how many electrons there will be on an outer shell by the group number they are in. - 5ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATIONElements whose atoms have a full outer energy level are VERY STABLE and UNREACTIVE. This group is called the NOBLE GASES.
- 6ELECTRONIC FIGURATION2, 8, 8 and continues with 8s
- 7PERIODIC TABLEHORIZONTAL rows in a periodic table is called PERIODS
VERTICAL columns on a periodic table are called GROUPS. - 8ISOTOPESIsotopes are atoms with the same number of protons, BUT different numbers of neutrons.
Isotopes of an element have the same chemical reactions.
