| What is the soul? | The non-physical part of a person which is immortal |
| Why is it believed that animals don't have souls? | God breathed the breath of life into Adam's nostrils which gave him a soul. Genesis 2:7 "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being. God did not do this to animals. |
| Significance of 1 Corinthians 15:42? | Tells us that the body is perishable, it is prone to sin and temptations and cannot resist. There is also a spiritual body. |
| 1 Peter 3:18 "he went and preached to the spirits in prison" | Jesus descended into hell and freed the people who had been there since the Old Testament. Medieval Christians thought those people would enter heaven when Jesus overcame originals sin. Baptism is believed to wash away original sin. |
| What is purgatory? | Roman Catholic belief that there is another place where Christians are sent to have their souls cleansed until they are fully ready for heaven. |
| Significance of confessing sins? | Roman Catholics and some Anglicans believe it will help them lead a better life because of John 20:13 "If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven" |
| What is general judgement? | When God will pass his final sentence on the whole of humanity as well as on the soul and body of each individual |
| What is particular judgement? | Judgement given to every soul when a person dies. Roman Catholics believe this will allow a soul to go into H H OR P. |
| Materialism? | When a person believes there is only the body, no soul. Usually atheists. |
| Dualism. | Christians are dualists, believe the soul and body are separate. |
