Question Answer
What did Guardia et al look at? Whether those with eating disorders show a significant difference in judging their own body compared to the bodies of a control and whether they showed difference in judging the bodies of other people.
Who were the sample of Guardia et al? 50 young females - 25 with eating disorders gathered from clinics and 25 healthy controls. All were from France. The controls were matched to participants in a matched pairs design. None of those with eating disorders had co morbidities.
How good were the matched pairs? Very similar - both had a near identical average age, level of education and height.
What was the first procedure of Guardia et al? The participants had to judge whether they themselves could fit through a projected doorway and had to say whether they believed they could fit through without changing speed or turning sideways.
What was the second procedure of Guardia et al? They had to judge whether the experimenter would be able to fit through the door without changing speed or turning sideways.
What was the experimenter like? 28 years old, 1,6m in height, 52kg weight, shoulder width of 38cm, stood 5.9m from the door projection,
How were results accumulated? By ratios - for example, if a participants shoulder width was 40cm but they said the smallest door they could fit through was 50cm, they had a 1.25 ratio (4:5). A ratio over 1 meant they overestimated the side of their own body.
What were the results for the participant group (eating disorders)? On the first procedure (judging if they themselves can get through a door) they had a ratio of 1.321. In the second procedure, they had a radio of 1.2. They were slightly worse at judging their own weight.
What were the results for the control group? On the first procedure, they had a ratio of 1.106 and on the second procedure had a radio of 1.137.
What do the results show? Participants with an eating disorder are more likely to overestimate the size of themselves compared to a control group. However, there is no significant difference between the ability of the eating disorder group and the control group in predicting whether the experimenter could fit through.
What is the generalisabilty of Guardia et al like? Rather low, the sample size only consisted of 25 anorexic patients, all were female and all were from the same area in France. Ungeneralisable to men, people from different countries, etc.
What is the reliability of Guardia et al like? Good as they had a standardised procedure, eg, all P's stood the same distance away from the door projection. It's also good as it found similar results to an earlier study in 2010.
What application to reality does Guardia et al have? It demonstrates that people with anorexia have distorted thinking when it comes to their own body image. Hence, it can help improve therapies for them.
Does Guardia et al have good validity? Good task validity as people with anorexia will often have to pass through doorways in reality. Lab experiment so high internal validity but low external validity. Matched pairs also a good design to use for validity.
Was Guardia et al ethical? Yes, it got permission from an ethics company, had all P's sign full consent forms and got permission from parents/guardians of anyone under the age of 18.
