Question Answer
Kohlbergs Theory of Cognitive Development A childs understanding of the world develops with age
Kohlbergs Three Stages of Gender Development 1. Gender Identity 2. Gender Stability 3. Gender Constancy
Gender Stability Between 3.5 and 4.5 They realise that they will always be the same sex
Gender Constancy Between 4.5 and 7 They realise that gender stays the same even with changing appearance. eg a man wearing a dress is still a man
Slaby and Frey Carried out interviews on children of various ages and provide evidence for Kohlbergs stages Also found that the more developed children are the more they pay attention to models of the same gender
Cordua Children aged 7-8 (Gender constancy stage) Were shown a film showing a man in a nurse role and a woman as the doctor and they were asked which was the doctor and which was the nurse. The children had a tendency to reverse the roles. Shows that children recognise stereotypes
Damon Told children aged between 4-9 a story about a boy that played with dolls and his parents told him not to. Then he asked is it right for other people to tell the boy what to play with and was it okay for him to play with dolls Four year olds said it was ok Six year olds say it isnt ok Nine year olds say its odd but ok Shows that gender is developmental and that a child understanding of gender is a reflection of their cognitive development
Evaluation of Gender Schema Theory Gender ideas can radically change over time. Historically and personally Why do some change their understanding of gender appropriate behaviour while others don't Why do males have a more fixed idea of gender? Doesn't take social interaction into account Explains why children act according to gender rather then just follow any models
Evaluation of Kohlberg It only describes, it doesn't explain Doesn't take different views of what i gender appropriate from different children
Three Stage of Gender Schema Development 1. Child learns what is associated with each sex 2. The child makes links between different components of the schema 3. Child can apply linked components for both sexes
Gender Schema A mental representation of a persons individual ideas of gender appropriate behaviour. We incorporate appropriate behaviours into our schema which then determines future behaviour.
