Question Answer
Output, Output Devices Screens and Monitors Monitors have the advantage of being able to display a moving image rather than just the static ones that can be produced by a printer
CRT Monitor These are based on cathode ray tubes that fire electrons at a screen to make each pixel glow in the correct colour. they give clear, sharp displays at low cost.
TFT Monitor (thin film transistor) These monitors are much flatter and so take up less room that CRT monitors. They use liquid crystals to form the image. their small size makes then v popular even though the images on TFT screens may not be as clear as the equivalent size CRT
Digital Projectors They can be used to display a large version of the monitor output onto a screen so that it can be viewed by a larger audience in a classroom. they can be portable but if they are set up on a ceiling then they don't need to be set up each time when they are being used.
Interactive Whiteboards These whiteboards have have a touch-sensitive surface that can be written on using a stylus shaped marker/pen. Handwriting recognition can be used to convert handwritten text to computer text and the work can be saved or printed. These devices are BOTH input and output devices.
Plasma Screens These are often used as TVs but can instead be used for normal computer monitors and can be seen in public areas e.g. shopping centres. they are available in v large sizes and whole banks of them can be used together to make huge wall-mounted displays
SMALL DISPLAYS PDAs These generally have a larger screen than a mobile phone and users expect to be able to run application software such as word processors and spreadsheets on them. This means that the user has to scroll around to see large documents which can be frustrating, but the designers try to keep this to a minimum by designing screen layouts carefully. They also usually have touch screens.
PRINTERS Laser Printer These print a full page at a time in a similar way to a photocopier.
