Vectors

Kashly Cash Further Maths AS level English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1Definition of a vectorA quantity which has both magnitude and direction. It is usually represented by a straight line.
  2. 2Definition of a scalarHas no direction we are only interested in its size or magnitude.
  3. 3Definition of a unit vector. What are the common ones we come across?A vector of length one.
    i (1,0) and j(0,1)
  4. 4What is a position vector?A vector that is relative to a fixed origin. This vector could be used to give a measurement.
  5. 5What is the vector (4,3) in the letter form? What is the vector -j+2i in the number form?4i + 3j
    (2,-1)
  6. 6What is the magnitude of a vector and how do you find it?The magnitude is the length of the vector, you find it with Pythagoras.
  7. 7What is meant by the direction of the vector? The direction of the vector is given as an angle of bearing. If they do not ask where they have measure the vector from include that in your answer. EG. 90 from the horizontal.
  8. 8If we know the direction and magnitude of a vector. How would we find the component form?Using simple trig.
i would be found using cos, and j would be found using sin.
  9. 9What is a resultant vector and how do we find it?A resultant vector is the singular overall vector acting on an object. You find this by adding all the vectors together.
