Flashcards
Drained and undrained strength
Cards in this deck (3)
- 1Why should C' be treated with caution? If peak strengths are used, the failure envelope is not a straight line bit slightly curved. Extrapolating back using a straight line can suggest that c'>0 and a lower peak friction angle at low stresses. This is apparent cohesion.
- 2How can we get false cohesion from tests?By conducting a test too fast. In a drained triaxial test on a stiff clay are not fully drained because loading is too fast, the negative pore pressures cannot fully dissipate leading to a false strength.
- 3Why is total stress analysis used?Using the slow drainage of fine soils like clays and silts, if no drainage is allowed during shearing we can measure an apparent strength called the undrained shear strength. We don't need to know pore pressure or effective stress just the total applied stress.
