Flashcards
RESEARCH METHODS ADV + DISAD
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1LABORATOY EXPERIMENTSADVANTAGES:
- highly reliable - can be replicated
- produce same results
DISADVANTAGES:
- can't control all variables
- Hawthorne effect (unnatural behaviour)
- lacks internal validity
- small scale studies - not representative - 2FIELD EXPERIMENTSADVANTAGES:
- natural surroundings (not artificial)
- no Hawthorne effect - participants don't know they are in an experiment
-can study past events
DISADVANTAGES:
- unethical - participants give no consent to be in experiment
- more natural - less control over variables - 3QUESTIONNAIRESADVANTAGES:
- practical strength - quick/cheap
- no need to recruit/train interviewers
- data easy to quantify
-reliable
DISADVANTAGES:
- data often limited/superficial
- people wont complete long/time-consuming questionnaires
- may be necessary to offer incentives - adds cost - 4STRUCTURED INTERVIEWSADVANTAGES:
- large scale sample - quick and cheap
- gather suitable straightforward info
- results easily quantified - use closed-ended questions
- reliable - easy to standardise/control
DISADVANTAGES:
- only snapshots in a moment - don't capture dynamic nature of social life
- inflexible - cant pursue interests that pop up during interview - 5OFFICIAL STATISTICSADVANTAGES:
- free source of big amount of quantitative data
- representative - cover entire population
DISADVANTAGES:
- gov. uses it for its own purposes
- interpretivists - social constructs
- not always reliable - 6UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWSADVANTAGES:
- builds rapport - interviewee opens us
- flexible - allows to explore meanings
- high validity (positivists disagree)
DISADVANTAGES:
- training more thorough - more expensive
- take a long time - small sample
- large amounts of data - difficult to transcribe
- not reliable - not a standardised measuring instrument - 7PARTICIPANT OBSERVATIONADVANTAGES:
- gives insight into people's lives - verstehen
-flexible - high validity (positivists reject)
DISADVANTAGES:
- fieldwork time-consuming
- need to be trained - expensive
- can be dangerous/personally stressful
- small scale group - unrepresentative
- unreliable - 8DOCUMENTSADVANTAGES:
- may be the only resource for studying the past
- free or cheap - large amounts of data
- using existing documents - saves sociologist time
- high in validity - personal meanings
DISADVANTAGES:
- cant always gain access to them
- positivists - unreliable - not standardised
- unrepresentative
