Hamilton 1963 - Kin Selection Theory Individuals are more likely to sacrifice themselves for relatives. Still contributes to the survival of genes by helping close relatives.
Dawkins 1989 - Selfish Gene Theory Self-sacrifice could promote one's own genes; not a question of individual survival but of gene survival. Kin altruism = 'egoism'
Trivers 1971 - Reciprocal Altruism Theory Helping behaviour among non-kin evolved as an alternative system during evolution. Based on altruistic acts paying off long-term ('tit-for-tat' strategy).
Bateson et al. 1981 - Empathy - Altruism Theory Some helpful actions are altruistic motivated by a genuine desire to increase another's welfare - helper's motives determine whether a behaviour is altruistic or not.
Bateson 1981 - Card 2 Perception of a situation and emotion that follows determines if an individual will help or not. Altruism can only happen if another perspective is taken.
Altruism When people help others with no reward.
Darwin Suggested that the evolution of altruism should be seen in relation to what could be advantageous to the group a person belongs to, rather than what could be advantageous by the individual alone.
