Flashcards
Revelation
Cards in this deck (12)
- 1Is religion a factual proposition?- Could be more about assertions.
- Picking things that are good for the moment.
- You could read it as a personal account, it doesn’t have to be a fact just what you can gain from it. - 2Propositional revelation view -- God directly reveals information to people in factual human terms e.g. God speaks to Adam and Eve.
- Reflects traditional thinking about religious belief - inductive leap. - 3Propositional revelation view -- If a religious experience is ineffable then how can this be put into words and surely this would make it untrue?
- Personal God.
- Fundamentalist Christian. - 4Strengths- Reflects traditional thinking about being a religious believer - accepting/rejecting certain propositions.
- Acceptance or rejection of certain factual propositions is what separates different religious traditions. - 5Weaknesses- If God is transcendent, how can our language explain it as fact?
- How is God supposed to have revealed propositional truths - dictation or with a pen?
- How can one know which revelations are true propositions? - 6Weaknesses- You can't resolve theological debates.
- Content of revelation is a matter of interpretation e.g. Paley and Conan Doyle see beauty of the natural world as expressing part of God's nature.
- Non-Propositional theory cannot appeal to facts or belief of faith. - 7Weaknesses- Different religions claim different propositional revelations.
- The reader of the bible has to interpret it as a propositional truth.
- Revelations are only a result of human understanding - they don’t reveal direct knowledge of God. - 8Non-propositional revelation view -- William Temple - 'they are themselves revealed directly'.
- The accounts of the bible should not be taken literally.
- This is because God is impersonal and transcendent. - 9Non-propositional revelation view -- To accept it would undermine the faith that individuals demonstrated in the bible.
- Story which conveys a deeper meaning.
- More about believing 'in' than believing 'that'.
- More personal and not as authoritative. - 10Strengths- More flexible
- Personal relationship with God
- Avoids criticisms of propositional view
- Reflects the ineffability of religious experience
- Make room for religious pluralism
- Accepts contradictions in sacred text. - 11Weaknesses- Interpretations promote any action, even bad ones.
- 100 interpretations don’t get us any closer to what God is.
- No basis for factual propositions - it is empty - you believe in something made up because you want to. - 12Fideism -- Non-propositional revelation is linked.
- The idea that faith is independent of reason (Leap of Faith)
- Religious faith is not about accepting rational propositions but about attitude.
- Traditional arguments are inadequate
