Nomenclature of environmental psychology Environmental psychology, environment and behaviour, architectural psychology, man-environment relations, ecological psychology, eco-behaviour science, etc.
Background to Evironmental Psychology Humans are now healthier and live longer; however, this has not been translated into greater subjective happiness.
Why does possessing more wealth not make us happier? Adaptation-level phenomenon (habituation) Social comparison (some suggest that has our incomes rise we have a new group towards which we are directing our upward comparisons. The social comparison then is translated into dissatisfaction of our current income; this is a possible reason for adaptation.
A related problem in environmental psychology? Because of increased population and consumption, we have overshot the earth's long term carrying capacity. A sustainable future will require controlled population growth, increased efficiency, and moderated resourse consumption.
New Zealand's eco foot print vs. eco performance and environmental sustainability NZ has one of the worst eco foot prints in the world. However, it also has one of the highest levels of eco performance and environmental sustainability. Reasons for this are perhaps NZ's isolation, its' large export and import market, and individual wealth.
Nz's consumption rate is attrociously high.
What are some of the demographic predictors of ecological concern Girls are more ecologically concerned than males. Age doesn't not seem to matter. Religiosity and Right wing political values are predictors of less ecological concerns
Human values which predict ecological concern Altruism, concerned with social justice and equality; Biospheric values, concerned with protecting the environment; and Self-transcendence, a focus on things transcending the self, are all predictors of ecological concern. Conservatism, openness, and self-enhancement are predictors of less ecological concern
RWA Right wing authoritarianism is a strong predictor of less ecological concern
SDO Social Dominance Orientations; a favouring of hierarchies of humans over nature, are predictive of less ecological concerns
In environmental engagement which out of RWA and SDO are greater predictors? SDO
Anthropogenic climate change and guys Guys are more likely to have a strong SDO and this in turn is more likely to lead to less belief in anthropogenic climate change.
Personality traits which predict ecological concern Agreeableness and Openness to experiences
Psycho-social factors influencing urban edible gardening Attitude -> Intention Social norm -> Intention Perceived behavioural control (PBC) -> Intention PBC was the strongest. If you were able to influence PBC then you should be able to influence intention
