He is dazzled by what he sees -Painful journey back to tell the others. Is rejected and threatened with death.
What do the different realms, themes and people represent? Shadowy realm= our world Escapee= Socrates Surface of the Earth= the forms The sun= the Good
What are forms? Ideal versions of things in the material world
What did Plato argue? There is a world higher and more meaningful than ours, inhabited by the forms
What did Plato believe was behind all material, temporary things in this world? A form that is eternal and immutable
What are the different intellectual facilities used to see the realm of the senses and the realm of the forms? Opinion (doxa) and knowledge (episteme)
How can Plato's theory of the forms explain how we can use a single term for many things (eg. beauty)? Plato said we must have some criteria of beauty that we all share and this would originate in the realm of the forms
How does the divided line work?
What is "The Good"? The source of all forms. It was beyond even Plato's capabilities to describe it. He uses the simile of the sun to try and explain it. Although you cannot look at it directly, you can look at what is illuminated by it
Give two criticisms of the forms? How many forms are there? Is there a form for hair or dirt? The Third Man Argument- Aristotle asks if there has to be a form accounting for the differences between forms and the particular thing
