test for carbonate atoms (co3 2- ) -add dilute acid -test the gas given off with limewater IF CARBONATE IONS ARE PRESENT -it will fizz or bubble when gas is given off -the gas will turn the lime water milky (showing co2 is present)
Test for Chloride Ions (Cl-) - add dilute nitric acid -shake the mixture -add drops of silver nitrate IF CHLORIDE IONS ARE PRESENT -a white precipitate of silver chloride forms
Test for Sulfate ions (SO4 2-) -add drops of hydrochloric acid -shake the mixture -add barium chloride IF SULPHATE IONS ARE PRESENT -a white precipitate of barium sulphate forms
