TCP IP illustrated Link Layer

Dustin Sanders English 16 cards

Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 1what collision algorithm first made Ethernet popular?CSMA/CD
    (This is a MAC protocol)
  2. 2What does an ethernet frame begin with and what's important about it?Preamble, contains "clock recovery" to help receiving card figure out when frame is arriving and how much time between bits.
  3. 3What follows the Preamble of an ethernet frame?SFD, start of frame delimiter
  4. 4what is the purpose of the FCS/CRC field?it's there to check the integrity of the frame
  5. 5What enables VLANS to exist?Tagging. (dot1q for example) traffic is tagged and this is what separates it)
  6. 6802.3ad/802.1ax deal with what?link aggregation (think PAgP/LACP)
  7. 7What is Flow Control?aka, slow your roll....
If one NIC is sending more data than the other can handle, receiver can send PAUSE frames to get sender to slow rate of transmission
  8. 8What is PPP?Point to Point Protocol, carries IP datagrams over serial links
(can use authentication, like why your home router needs to log in before it will work, but that's PPPoE)
  9. 9What is a loopback?software interface that allows network communication on the same host computer
  10. 10What is fragmentation? When a datagram is larger than the MTU, it must be fragmented
  11. 11What is the "Path MTU"the minimum MTU size across a path (crossing multiple links)
  12. 12What is used to find out the size of the Path MTU?MTU discovery (PMTUD) RFC 1191
  13. 13What is tunneling generally?the idea of carrying lower-layer
traffic in higher-layer (or equal-layer) packets
  14. 14What is an overlay network?networks where the “links” are
really virtual links implemented in some other protocol instead of physical connections
  15. 15what is promiscuous mode?an interface will receive traffic even if not destined for them (otherwise it'd drop it)
  16. 16How does a switch limit network sniffing?Only traffic destined for the host on the end of the switched link is sent over the link, unlike a hub.
