Briefly explain the procedure of Asch's research and what it involves. The study involves the participants judging the length of line on a screen. The confederates deliberately gave wrong answers to see if participants would conform.
Briefly explain the findings of Asch's research. Naive participants conformed on 36.8% of the trials and 25% never conformed.
Explain the variations of Asch's study. Conformity increased up to group size of four, dissenter reduced conformity' conformity increased when task was harder.
Explain two evaluation points of Asch's research. -'Child of its time' - less conformity in the 80's than the 50's -Artificial situation and task demand characteristics may have caused participants to play along with the tasks. -Limited application of the findings as it was only conducted on American men. -Findings only apply to certain situations because of ethical issues of the study.
Briefly explain the procedure of Zimbrado's Experiment. Mock Prison environment where students were randomly assigned as guards or prisoners.
What are the findings of Zimbardo's Standford Prison experiment? Guards became very brutal and prisoners became withdrawn and depressed. They both undertook very stereotypical roles.
Describe some evaluations of Zimbardo's research. +Control over variables because of random assignment increasing internal validity. -Lack of realism as participants may have played up to the roles because of stereotypes from the media. -Only one third of guards were brutal so conclusions where exaggerated. -Lack of research support and ethical issues.
What is locus of control? Locus of control involves how we direct events in our lives. Internals believe they are mostly responsible for what happens to them and externals believe it is mainly a matter of luck or outside forces.
What is internalisation? Internalisation is a type of conformity where we take on the majority view because we believe it to be correct.
What is a monotropic attachment? One particular attachment is different from others and is of high importance in a child's development.
What is the multi-store model of memory? A representation of how memory works in terms of three stores called sensory register, short term memory and long term memory. It also explains how information is transferred, remembered and forgotten.
What is a naturalistic observation? A naturalistic observation involves watching and recording behaviour in its natural setting.
Briefly explain Normative social influence. An explanation of how conformity where one agrees with the opinion of of the majority in order to be accepted and gain social approval and be liked.
