Flashcards
FW/D - Determinism
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1What does determinism state? That there are laws of nature which govern everything which happens and that all our actions are the result of these scientific laws. Every choice we make is determined by the situation immediately before it, and that situation by situations before it and so on.
- 2What is determinism's view on freedom of choice?Freedom of choice is an illusion and so personal responsibility is a meaningless concept as are blame and punishment.
- 3What do we feel responsibility for?we do feel a sense of responsibility for what we have done even if we do not choose that action. E.g. a driver who kills a child who ran out in front of his car would blame himself for the death, even though it was not his fault and he could not have prevented it.
- 4Where does determinism originate from?Determinism has a long history and may be seen in the fatalism of Greek tragedy, in which people are the helpless victims of circumstances, necessity and the Fates.
- 5Who was determinism formulated more precisely by?John Calvin during the 16th century and is still followed by Presbyterian churches today. This belief says that man is a complete sinner who is incapable of coming to God, and has a sinful free will which is only capable of rejecting God so predestination must occur or nobody will be saved.
