Flashcards
Special Circulations during exercise
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1Explain what happens to the renal system during exercise, and how does it deal with this decrease in blood flow?Decreased blood flow, increased oxygen extraction efficiency.
- 2the decreases in blood flow is due to increased ________ nerve activity causing vasoconstriction.sympathetic
- 3What is the main control mechanism of coronary blood flow?Mainly metabolic, the main metabolic vasodilator is adenosine.
- 4Explain the way we increase oxygen delivery to the heart and why this is the only way we are able to do this.increase blood flow to the heart (similar percentage but due to increasing CO we increase total volume). The heart is already very efficient at oxygen extraction so it cant improve much more during exercise
- 5During exercise heart rate increases, what implication does this have for the blood flow to the heart? It means we have less diastolic time (relaxed time) so less time for blood to flow into the heart meaning we have lower blood flow to the heart as heart rate increases.
- 6What happens to cerebral flow during exercise?%age of CO decreases although the absolute volume remains the same.
- 7How might blood flow change to different areas of the brain during exercise? The function part of the brain sees increased blood flow compared to parts not being used.
- 8What is the control mechanism for the brains blood flow?CO2 levels. Increase in CO2 leads to vasodilation and decrease in CO2 leads to vasoconstriction.
- 9If we increase breathing rate too high what might happen to the blood flow to the brain and why? What mechanism is in place to prevent this happening post heavy exercise? We would exspect to see less blood flow to the brain because when we increase BR we blow off CO2. CO2 is the controller of brain blood flow meaning we would see reduced blood flow to the brain causing us to fall unconscious. Normally cerebral autoregulation prevents black outs post heavy exercise.
- 10During exercise skin flow _____ compared to at rest. The skin plays a large role in _________.increases, thermoregulation
- 11Describe what we see to skin blood flow as we begin exercise.Skin blood flow decreases initially as muscles get the blood but then skin blood flow increases as a method of thermoregulation.
- 12What happens to the time taken for skin blood flow to increase when exposed to heat under exercise and rest conditions? We increase blood flow as a result of heat stress at a slower rate when we are exercising than when we are at rest. this is because we prioritise muscles during exercise.
- 13The skin blood flow increase has no muscle pump therefore is reliant on increased ________.Cardiac output.
- 14What does the splanchnic system include?Live, GI tract, Pancreas and spleen.
- 15Describe the effects of exercise on blood flow to the splanchnic system. How can it deal with this decrease in blood flow?decrease percentage of cardiac output and decrease total volume. More efficient oxygen extraction during exercise.
