Flashcards
X-Rays

Cards in this deck (8)
- 1X-rays- Highly penetrating EMR with high frequencies, small wavelengths and large photon energies
- Produced when high-energy electrons are decelerated rapidly and lose their KE as high-energy EMR - 2X-ray production- An X-ray tube uses a high voltage to accelerate electrons before they are allowed to strike a metal target and lose their KE
- If incoming electrons have enough energy, they can remove an inner orbital electron
- An electron from a higher energy level transitions down to replace it, emitting energy as an X-ray
- 3Heater voltageHeats the cathode, causing the ejected electrons to accelerate across to the target anode
- 4Ways of energy loss- If an electron collides with the target and stops suddenly, it loses all its KE at once and emits one photon equal to the KE of the electron
- If electrons strike the target and slow down in collisions with individual atoms, they lose their energy in more than one step, producing several photons with less than the KE of the electron - 5Formula for maximum photon energy

- 6X-ray spectrum- Consists of a line spectrum superimposed over the continuous spectrum
- Continuous spectrum results from deceleration of incoming electrons
- Line spectrum results from electron transitions to lower energy levels
- 7Soft X-raysFall in the range of the EM spectrum between UV and gamma rays
- 8Hard X-raysOccupy same region of the EM spectrum as gamma rays
(gamma rays are produced by atomic nuclei, while X-rays are produced by deaccelerating electrons)
